My boy bought a Wii U a few months ago for his son and nieces and nephews who come to visit. That thing is pretty cool, they can use the gamepad with the screen to play any game without the TV being on so you can still watch TV while they play.
Also we have been playing Mario Kart and Smash Bros on it a lot so I can vouch that it's pretty fun overall. Neat little system and not all that expensive.

You need to promote hatred and internecine warfare between your kids, and the only way that's happening properly is with Mario Party and Mario Kart.

Yes. However, they also need Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros 4. Despite having no true racing games, and having the worst specs, the Wii U is the new-gen console I lust after the most but cannot have due to being a poor college student.

Nintendo has always been a bit low on the specs, but their games have always been really fun in my experience, so that was sort of what made me choose that over the PS4 and XBox....that and they can still play their old wii games on them.

My brother just bought one, the games we got are really fun (we're in our 20's now). We have Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros and Nintendoland.

I have a WiiU for more than a year and I don't remember if it remained turned off for more than 12h during this time. Blame Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros U, Game&Wario, Shovel Knight, Guacamelee and tons of other games I don't have yet but I'll buy in the future :)
There are several major differences between the WiiU and the X1/PS4:
- WiiU have tons of exclusives, while PS4/X1 have tons of shooters or games you can play on Steam;
- WiiU games come finished and polished, while PS4/X1 games come broken and full of glitches and bugs;
- WiiU updates aren't huge downloads (except the day one update, fixed on current units), while even for simple dancing games on X1/PS4 you need to download updates as big as 2GB
- Nintendo knows how to do DLC: Months after releasing Mario Kart 8, Nintendo released 2 DLC packs for $12 which adds 50% more content! This is totally different from major Microsoft and Sony -friendly publishers who ship the game with the DLC already programmed on the disc and you pay to unlock it;
- WiiU Pro Controller's batteries last forever
- From the 20 best rated current-gen games on Metacritic, 17 of them are from Nintendo.
